As work from home business owners, we must work very hard on search engine optimization, this is how we get ranking on the different search engines. So, if you are just starting a work from home business, or have had a home business for a short time, this is one of the first things that needs to be worked on.
You need to find the right balance between on-page optimization and off-page optimization. Both influence the position of your website in the search results. Which factors are more important and what exactly should you do to improve the position of your site?
Google alone has about 300 different optimizations they use for their rankings. I’m only going to cover some of the most important ones.
What is Search Engine Optimization:
On-page Optimization
This refers to the factors that you can control on your web site.
1. The content on your web page.
I would suggest the unique content to be about 400 to 500 words.
2. The number of pages on your website.
I suggest at least 3 pages minimum – a main page, an about me page, and a contact page.
3. The number of keywords and related keywords on your web pages.
Try to incorporate your top 3 keywords into your content, using each one at least a couple oftimes.
4. Link the pages of your site to each other.
You need to link every page of your website to each other, whether it be 2 pages to 100 pages.
5. The structure of your website.
Your website should be easy to navigate by your visitors.
Off-page Optimization
This refers to the ranking factors that are usually out of your control. The most important off-site factor are the links to your web site:
1. The number of backlinks that point to your website.
These are links from other people’s website and blogs. Try to get as many backlinks as possible.
2. The quality of the backlinks.
You should try to get backlinks from high page rank websites and blogs. Also any authority sites, .edu, and .gov sites.
3. Try to get your website bookmarked on social bookmark sites.
Try to get your website bookmarked on as many social sites as possible. These would be sites like Mixx and Propeller.
4. Sign up for a Twitter account.
Many Internet marketers are using Twitter to promote their website.
5. Use Facebook.
Facebook has exploded in the past year, many Internet marketers are using Facebook to promote their websites also.
There have been debates for many years about which method is better – on-page or off-page optimization. I highly recommend using both methods.
By optimizing the on-page factors of your website, you make it easy for search engine spiders to find your web pages.
The content of your web pages should contain your keywords, so that the search engines know what your website is about.
Links from other websites, that contain your target keywords, show the search engines that other people also find your website relevant. If other people mention your website on social bookmark services, then search engines know that real people like your website.
Search engine optimization is very important, this is how you get your website found by the general public. As work from home business owners, we must do everything possible to get our website ranked. Whether you are just starting a work from home business or have had a home business for a short time, you must work on the search engine optimization of your
website.
